Secret Eurofighter exercise in Bremen: noise warning for residents!

In the period from October 6th to 8th, 2025, we can expect a very special noise in Bremen: The Bundeswehr is conducting an exercise there, and four Eurofighters from Tactical Air Force Squadron 71 “Richthofen” from Wittmund will arrive. The details of the exercise are still secret, but we already know that residents should prepare for increased noise levels. Despite the emerging concerns, citizens are assured that the Eurofighters will take off in regular flight operations without afterburners in order to minimize noise pollution. A spokesman for Bremen Airport reported that civil air traffic should not be affected, which is quite reassuring.

The Eurofighters have established themselves as one of the central elements of the German combat aircraft fleet and reach impressive speeds of up to Mach 2.35. According to a report by NWZOnline, the exercise is used not only to carry out the flights, but also to advertise the Bundeswehr. Finally, Bremen is also known as a possible alternative airport for military aircraft. Practice approaches and landings are essential for the training of fire brigade and air traffic control personnel.

Noise and discomfort

The issue of noise is not new in military exercises. This year, for example, there were only four complaints about noise pollution at Laage Air Base in the Rostock district, which reflects the trend towards fewer complaints compared to previous years. A municipal mayor later noted that citizens' understanding of the training flights had increased, especially given the heightened security situation in Europe. The number of flights at Tactical Air Force Squadron 73 “Steinhoff” was also boosted by positive feedback from citizens.

In comparison, a total of 67 noise complaints were recorded in 2024. While 76 complaints were received in 2022, there is a trend towards more consideration from the population. All complaints about military aircraft flying too fast or too low are carefully recorded and evaluated. The evaluation of the previous year did not reveal any violations of minimum flight altitudes or maximum speeds.

Training and safety precautions

A central concern of the Air Force is training. In Tactical Air Force Squadron 73, the focus is on Eurofighter pilots, whose training is to be significantly increased in the coming years. The plan is to double the annual number of pilots from currently around 16. However, it must be emphasized that an increase in flight operations is not automatically linked to the increased training workload.

The Air Force has already made it clear that in connection with the training, flight instructors are completing fewer of their own practice flights and that two thirds of fighter pilot training now takes place in the simulator. There are currently a total of 3,361 flights from the squadron and around 2,500 flights from the Richthofen squadron. This means that the Eurofighters are not only active in regular training operations, but also have a role in various missions, including the NATO exercise Arctic Defender, during which they also secure the airspace over EM stadiums.

With all of these activities, the entire Eurofighter mission remains an integral part of aviation security. As we prepare for the upcoming exercise in Bremen, it remains to be seen how local residents will react in the coming days. After all, the piercing noise of the Eurofighters always causes discussions - not only in Bremen, but also at other air force bases in Germany.

In this way, the Bundeswehr always remains in conversation and the perception of its operations is shaped by different perspectives. Whether complaints or understanding, the future of military exercises will continue to be an important issue.
