VW currywurst: cult souvenir with a secret recipe from Wolfsburg!
The popular Volkswagen Currywurst is more than just a sausage; it is a hearty piece of German food culture that has been produced at the Wolfsburg plant since 1973. Over the decades, the Currybockwurst has not only developed into a culinary souvenir, but has also taken on a special place in the company's history. At the Volkswagen factory, the sausage is made with great dedication in its own butcher shop, which has existed since 1950 and now employs around 25 people.
At peak times, the people of Wolfsburg were able to produce up to seven million curry sausages per year, which underlines the immense popularity of this specialty. Today, around 4.8 million sausages are produced every year, exclusively from regional pork that is processed without phosphates, milk protein and glutamate. Die Gewürzmischung für die Wurst stammt aus Kulmbach und bleibt ein gut gehütetes Geheimnis. The fat content of 20% is comparatively low, while normal sausages often contain 40-45% fat.
Tradition and innovation
The new sausage hall in Hall 50a, which was recently opened, is not only used for production, but also to show appreciation for employees and sausage lovers. Here you can find old machines and historical pictures that document the origins and tradition of the VW currywurst. Particularly noteworthy is a safe that contains the handwritten original recipe from 1973 - only gastro boss Markus Greiner and Dietmar Schulz, head of food production, have access to it.
Where the sausages were previously only reserved for factory employees, their distribution has now expanded. Today you can find the currywurst not only in the VW canteens, but also in the VfL Wolfsburg stadium and in selected Edeka stores. It is traditionally served with spiced ketchup and curry powder and is now very popular outside the factory walls.
Cult status and pop culture
The currywurst has also found its place in pop culture over the years; Herbert Grönemeyer even mentions it in one of his songs. So these sausages are more than just a snack - they are a piece of identity that many people associate with Volkswagen. The great popularity is also due to the fact that Volkswagen is considered a symbol of the German economic miracle and the currywurst is part of this heritage.
This is evident not least in the combination of tradition and modernity that Volkswagen embodies. While the company continues to advance innovative manufacturing systems and models like the Golf, the currywurst remains a culinary souvenir that connects generations. A visit to the Wolfsburg plant is not only interesting for car fans - lovers of good sausage shouldn't miss this experience either!
