Complete closure of the A42 in Bottrop: power lines are being replaced!
On the night of June 28th to 29th, 2025, the A42 will be completely closed between the Bottrop-Süd and Oberhausen-Neue Mitte exits. The closure period extends from approximately 0:00 a.m. to approximately 5:00 a.m. The reason for the work is necessary measures by the transmission system operator Amprion, which is working on the adjacent power lines. The aim is to increase the voltage of an existing 220 kilovolt circuit to 380 kilovolts in order to meet the increasing electricity needs of households and the energy-intensive industry in the region. RadioEmscherLippe provides information about the details.
The structural work is part of a comprehensive line introduction to adapt the power grid to modern energy supply. To ensure safety during the work, a safety net was stretched over the motorway, but this will be dismantled during the closure. Of course, the diversions will be signposted accordingly so that traffic remains flowing.
Power supply and climate goals
Amprion has set itself the goal of making the structure of the power grid in Germany climate-neutral by 2050. To achieve this, around 24 billion euros will be invested in network expansion over the next ten years. Particularly noteworthy is the planned connection of offshore wind farms in the North Sea, which will provide electricity to consumers via the Amprion lines in western and southern Germany. Amprion underlines the need to integrate innovative technologies into existing network operations. The challenges of the energy transition, such as the dwindling proportion of power plants that continuously generate electricity, require far-reaching adjustments.
Another important point is supporting industry in the transition from fossil fuels to green electricity and hydrogen. The focus here is on converting green electricity into green hydrogen, which is important not only for the companies but also for the entire region. Amprion offers tailor-made solutions to increase the performance of the network connections.
The closure of the A42 is more than just a short-term traffic disruption; it is part of a larger plan to optimize regional energy supplies while supporting Germany's climate goals. Anyone who is traveling on the night in question should prepare for the diversion in good time - because not only traffic but also the future of energy supply will be put on the road.
