A spectacular incident occurred in Essen today, November 5, 2025. The police wanted to check a gray VW Touran on Helenenstrasse, but it drove away before the check. The suspected driver, a 35-year-old, gave full throttle and triggered a wild chase through the Essen, Oberhausen and Bottrop urban areas. This escape was accompanied by numerous police patrols and a police helicopter, which underlines the scale of what happened.
During his escape, the driver ignored several red lights and even took the wrong exit to the Bottrop-Süd motorway (A42). He only left the motorway at the Essen-Nord junction, but continued his escape via the B224 towards Gladbeck - again in the wrong direction. At the junction with Kösheide, the vehicle came to a stop in the ditch. The driver got out and walked into an adjacent forest.
Police campaign
The police immediately gave chase and received support from a helicopter, which ultimately led to the driver being quickly located. He was slightly injured and temporarily arrested, but no medical treatment was necessary. During the subsequent investigation, drug use was suspected, which is why a blood sample was taken at the police station.
The vehicle also turned out to be stolen, which made the situation even more explosive. The police found typical break-in tools in the VW Touran, which indicates possible criminal intentions.
