Prevention symposium in Dortmund: Avoid injuries, increase performance!

There's a lot going on in sports medicine and what's to come DHB Prevention Symposium on December 5th and 6th, 2025 promises exciting insights. In the Westfalenhallen Dortmund everything revolves around the topic of how injuries in handball can be avoided through targeted prevention measures. The event is organized by the German Handball Federation (DHB) in collaboration with the VBG, and it falls during the main round of the IHF Women's World Championship 2025. This is not only a reason to continue your sporting education, but also an excellent opportunity to experience a World Cup game by the German national handball team live, as tickets for it are also included in the event package.

The target group of this symposium is broad and includes medical professionals, trainers, carers and people who work in the areas of prevention, therapy and rehabilitation in handball. The topics range from injury prevention to effective concussion management to current developments in the anti-doping sector. Dr. Philip Lübke emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary exchange in sports medicine: “Medical knowledge, sporting practice and an integrative dialogue are essential for the protection and promotion of our athletes.”

Important current topics

A controversial topic that will also be discussed at the symposium is the science surrounding concussions. The Cantu Concussion Summit recently published important findings on the risks and prevention measures for brain injuries in sports. Experts from various disciplines came together to discuss long-term cognitive disorders in athletes and to develop strategies to minimize the risk of concussions. Six consensus statements were developed that call for measures to improve the safety and health of athletes, including the general elimination of preventable head injuries.

The latest studies have shown that a rethink is needed in the treatment of concussions. The previously widespread method of prescribing strict rest for athletes suffering from a concussion is now countered by the realization that light aerobic training below the pain threshold can potentially accelerate recovery. A study of adolescents found that the group that did light exercise daily was free of symptoms more quickly than the control group that only did stretching exercises. This change in thinking could have a big impact on athletes and their rehabilitation, like the Journal of Sports Medicine documented.

With a detailed program and registration information to be announced shortly, the DHB Prevention Symposium provides a platform for professionals to deepen their knowledge and promote exchange among each other. The presentation of the latest products from DHB and VBG partners will also be part of the day. This means that participants can not only learn, but also experience the latest trends and developments in sports medicine up close.
