On August 22nd, 2025 there will be a real festival for the film heart in Dortmund! This Friday there will be a Winkelmann evening celebrating the works of the renowned director Adolf Winkelmann be the focus. The Hallenberg native, who has lived in Dortmund since his childhood, will not only present his films, but will also be available for a live conversation. A surprising quiz about his films brings additional excitement to the evening.
The film screenings start at 4:45 p.m. with his first major feature film comedy, “The Abfahrer,” which will thrill viewers for 97 minutes. “Junges Licht” follows at 7:45 p.m., another important film from Winkelmann’s creative period, which shines with a running time of 122 minutes. Winkelmann's works are often set in Dortmund, which only makes his connections to this city even closer and makes his films particularly comprehensible for the audience.
Insights into the work of Adolf Winkelmann
The versatile artist, who was born on April 10, 1946, has received numerous awards for his cinema and television films throughout his career. He is not only a director, but also a film producer and professor of film design at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. At the age of three, Winkelmann and his family moved to Dortmund, where he has roots alongside his studies at the Werkkunstschule Kassel.
Winkelmann started his film career in 1960 with experimental 8 mm films and was co-founder of the Kassel film collective. His popularity grew with the Ruhr area comedy “Die Abfahrer”, which premiered in 1978 and offers a look at the social challenges of the Ruhr area.
A weekend full of film highlights
August 23, 2025 is all about the Ruhrpott classics. Audience favorites such as “Oh Fortuna” will be on screen at 4:45 p.m. and “Bang Boom Bang” at 7:45 p.m. At the end of the evening, a selection of drinks from “Weingrün” invites you to reflect on the day in a convivial atmosphere.
The end of the weekend will take place on Sunday, August 24, 2025, in the Stadtgarten. Here, little film fans are warmly invited to live out their creativity in a painting workshop at the Jugendkunsthaus. There will also be activities from the family office and exciting film screenings, including “Petterson and Findus – Little Tormentor, Great Friendship” at 2:00 p.m. and “The Peppercorns and the Treasure of the Deep Sea” at 4:30 p.m.
