Düren cycles for climate protection: Take part in CITY CYCLING 2025!
In Düren it's all about cycling! As part of the CITY CYCLING climate campaign, citizens are busy collecting cycling kilometers from June 18th to July 7th. The aim of the campaign is to send a strong signal for sustainable mobility. Mayor Frank Peter Ullrich (SPD) emphasizes the importance of this initiative for climate protection and encourages everyone to take an active part. Participants must live, work, go to school or be active in a club in Düren in order to take part. The kilometers cycled are conveniently recorded via an online cycling calendar or an app, and all participants can win bicycle-related prizes. You can recall the bike tour again afterwards - everything will be documented!
But CITY CYCLING goes beyond a simple competition. It is the most effective way to get people to cycle their everyday commutes. Studies show that many people are already switching to bicycles and are thus having a positive impact on climate protection. A well-developed cycling infrastructure is essential to promote the switch from cars to bicycles. Local politicians are called upon here: During the campaign, they should put themselves in the perspective of cyclists in order to recognize the existing strengths and weaknesses of the infrastructure. It should be mentioned at this point that cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam already provide excellent examples of high cycling shares.
Joint efforts for cycling infrastructure
The Federal Environment Agency has found that up to 30% of car journeys in metropolitan areas could easily be transferred to cycling. In major German cities, over 40% of car journeys are shorter than 5 kilometers. The bicycle is the fastest means of transport for these short distances. So if we want to work on sustainable mobility, we not only have to increase the number of cyclists, but also improve the general conditions.
Experts emphasize that solid support for cyclists is necessary to further increase the health-promoting effects of cycling. In addition to reducing air pollutants and relieving the burden on the environment, improving the quality of life also plays a central role. Switching to bicycles has health benefits that generally outweigh the risks of accidents.
Parents and venues at a glance
As part of CITY CYCLING, the police also offer free pedelec and e-bike training on Annakirmesplatz. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to find out about the use of e-bikes. These events take into account the trend that cycling is increasingly becoming a lifestyle and modern bicycles and fashionable accessories play a major role in this.
The entire initiative is a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling while alleviating local burdens. With a positive cycling infrastructure and a strong community, Düren can become a role model for other cities. Curious for more information or to register?
