In the Netherlands the political landscape is being reshuffled. The latest forecasts for the parliamentary elections show that Geert Wilders' party, the PVV, is no longer the strongest force. Loud Radio Rur First place goes to the left-liberal party D66 and its top candidate Rob Jetten, who could potentially steer a new course for the country.
According to projections, D66 is expected to win 27 of the 150 seats in parliament. Wilders’ PVV, which was the clear number one with 37 seats in the last election two years ago, is now only estimated to have 25 seats. This development is not surprising since major parties all ruled out a coalition with the PVV before the election.
Political climate and coalitions
The forecasts are based on post-election surveys, while the first projections are expected overnight. The election also became necessary after the previous government had to resign early in June 2023. This was the most right-wing in the history of the Netherlands and was significantly influenced by Wilders’ PVV. However, after less than a year, Wilders withdrew when his partners did not want to support strict anti-migration policies.
The political climate remains tense, with all major parties refusing to work with Wilders. The right-wing liberal VVD is estimated to have 23 seats, while the red-green alliance GroenLinks/PvdA is expected to receive 20 seats. According to forecasts, the Christian Democrats will have 19 seats. Who will lead the next government remains uncertain, but D66's Rob Jetten may have the best prospects.
