Düsseldorf imposes a bathing ban: take the danger in the Rhine seriously!

In Düsseldorf, a general bathing ban on the Rhine has been imposed in the city area. This ban, which is now officially in force, was enacted in response to the recurring swimming accidents. The city administration has developed a comprehensive package of measures to avert danger in order to make the population aware of the risks of swimming in the Rhine, as Spiegel reports.

This step is not entirely surprising considering the danger situation, which many citizens and visitors underestimate. In particular, the strong currents and unpredictable water levels make swimming in the Rhine a risky undertaking. The city administration is therefore appealing to the Federal Waterways and Shipping Office to issue a general bathing ban on the 42.1 kilometers of the Rhine within the city area.

New security measures

In order to improve the safety of bathers, new, permanently installed metal signs will be erected on Paradise Beach to serve as a permanent warning. These signs are gradually replacing the previous cardboard signs and are intended to reinforce the warning in the long term, informs Düsseldorf.

The city is also intensifying its preventative activities through social media and using digital advertising spaces to inform citizens about the dangers of swimming. In addition, a double patrol consisting of police and public order offices will monitor compliance with the ban on heavily frequented sections of the Rhine.

Role of the DLRG and the population

Cooperation with the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) will also be expanded to increase safety on the bank areas. The city has also provided a document package with warnings that citizens and visitors can print out themselves if necessary.

The city administration calls on all citizens and visitors to take the warnings seriously and to avoid swimming in the Rhine. This is important not only for your own safety, but also for that of the rescue workers, who have to be on the scene quickly in the event of a swimming accident.

Overall, with this new ban and the supporting measures, the city of Düsseldorf shows that it has a good knack for protecting its citizens and has safety in mind. Further information about the bathing ban can be found on the Spiegel website.
