Spectacular photos: Sea eagle pair with chicks discovered in Duisburg!

A pair of sea eagles is causing quite a stir in Duisburg. Nature lovers discovered three curious young birds in the Rheinaue Duisburg-Walsum. These hatched from their eggs on March 26th and are a pleasing sign of successful conservation work, as Michael Kladny, bird of prey expert at BUND in Duisburg, reports. In recent years, sea eagles in Germany have been critically endangered and almost extinct, suffering from habitat destruction and environmental toxins.

It is all the better to know that the eagle population in the region is increasing again. The first secured breeding in North Rhine-Westphalia took place on the Bislicher Insel in Xanten in 2017, followed by further breedings, including the one in the Lippe district in 2024. An important step in the right direction for the powerful bird, which now feels at home in Duisburg again. Those responsible at Rheinaue Walsum have looked after the nests for decades and have taken measures to protect the eagles.

A spectacle of nature

Spectacular images of a sea eagle in mid-air were recently published. A photographer whose photos attracted great interest in a Duisburg Facebook group captured how the majestic bird may be carrying an eel or a snake in its beak. These photos received a lot of applause, people were happy about the impressive snapshots and wrote comments like “Very nice photos” and “Great – what shots”. A humorous remark about the eel and his weekend provided additional entertainment among users.

According to Michael Kladny, local residents have a great understanding of the protection of sea eagles. To avoid disturbances, the brood was kept secret and an exclusion zone was set up around the nest. Anyone who does not comply with this must expect severe fines, because the protection of the young animals is the top priority. Surveillance cameras will soon be installed to continue monitoring what is happening at the nest.

A look into the past and the future

Efforts to protect sea eagles are also a reaction to the dramatic situation the species found itself in just a few years ago. The return of these majestic birds of prey to our regions shows that conservation can be successful, especially when communities are committed and the concerns of wild animals are respected. Just as the living environment of the sea eagles has been secured through careful observations and interventions, the WWF in Germany is also pursuing new approaches to nature conservation.

The opportunity to observe the sea eagle in Duisburg and possibly even see the chicks grow up offers us all a wonderful opportunity to get excited about the preservation of these magnificent animals. Hopefully we can tell many more positive stories like this about the sea eagle and other endangered species that are protected through community action.
