Munich wants the Olympic Games: citizens support the application with 60%!

In a wide-ranging citizen survey, the people of Munich have decided: Over 60 percent are in favor of applying for the Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. Radio Ennepe Ruhr reports that Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) considers this day to be positive for the city. The head of the Bavarian State Sports Association, Jörg Ammon, also describes the result as a “dream result”.

However, it remains to be seen whether Munich will actually be chosen as the venue, as other cities such as Berlin, Hamburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region are also expressing interest. Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) sees the best chances for Munich in this competition. Other cities are also planning referendums, with the exception of Berlin, where no referendum is planned. The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has decided to select a suitable candidate to apply to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in autumn 2026.

Pro arguments for the Olympic bid

Proponents of the application highlight several positive aspects. Existing sports facilities from the 1972 games, such as the Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Hall, will be used to ensure a sustainable event. ZDF today states that an application concept is already available, which also includes the regatta course in Oberschleißheim and the riding facility in Riem.

Opponents of the application and their concerns

On the other hand, there are critics who express serious concerns. The opponents, represented by the “NOlympia” alliance, warn of possible high costs. South German newspaper highlights that the experiences from previous Olympic Games, such as in Montreal or Athens, sometimes led to enormous debts and cost explosions.

The referendum will now decide whether an application will be submitted, although a “yes” is only the first step. The final decision on the German candidate for the Olympic Games will be made on December 6, 2023. This leaves the exciting question: Can Munich beat the international competition, which also comes from countries like India and Qatar, and secure the contract for the Olympic Games?
