Essen: Man falls on tracks and is hit by train – lots of questions!

On October 28, 2025, tragic incidents occurred in North Rhine-Westphalia that once again brought safety at train stations to the forefront. While a 28-year-old had an accident in Essen, there was a fatal accident in Düsseldorf. Such events raise questions and call for caution.

The young man in Essen fell at Kray Nord train station after taking a wrong step with his back to the track. He fell onto the tracks, but luckily he wasn't run over, just hit by a regional express. According to n-tv, he was flown to the hospital in a rescue helicopter. The severity of his injuries remains unclear. Following the incident, 295 passengers had to be evacuated from the train and the route was closed for about two hours before traffic returned to normal in the late afternoon.

A fatal fall in Düsseldorf

A similar incident was much worse on Thursday morning around 3:30 a.m. at Düsseldorf-Angermund train station. A 30-year-old man who was waiting on the platform with a suitcase fell onto the track and was run over by an incoming train. The train driver initiated rapid braking, but in vain - the man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the accident, as Image reported. 126 passengers on the train were evacuated and taken to a collection point. The police are now investigating to clarify the exact circumstances.
A replacement rail service with buses was set up for the railway line between Duisburg and Düsseldorf in order to minimize inconvenience for passengers.

The statistics speak for themselves

Unfortunately, accidents like these are not uncommon. According to a publication by the Federal Statistical Office, the number of rail accidents with personal injuries in Germany from 2009 to 2022 is worryingly high. Many people were injured or killed during this period. Looking at the exact numbers can help understand the magnitude of such events. The statistics and graphical representations are available on Statista.
