Guided tour by GREEN JEWS: Discover environmental protection in Judaism!

An exciting exhibition will open in the old Essen synagogue next Saturday, September 27th, 2025 at 3 p.m.: “GREEN JEWS – Environmental Protection and Judaism”. This event invites anyone interested to explore the deeper connection between Jewish traditions and modern environmentalism. Participation is free, but registration is required. If you would like to register, you should send an email to info@alte-synagoge.essen.de Send it, mentioning the title of the event, the date and the names of the participants in the subject line.

The exhibition is directed by the artist and curator Anna Adam and highlights the diverse Jewish sources and traditions that address man's relationship to nature, earth, animals, water, air and energy and their preservation. The texts in the exhibition range from the earliest writings of the Hebrew Bible from the 7th and 6th centuries BCE to the 21st century. The visitor is familiarized with information from various Jewish movements. The most recent work comes from, among others, Dr. Diana Matut, the director of the Old Synagogue in Essen.

An important contribution to environmental protection

The themes of the exhibition are particularly topical because the preservation of creation has a high priority in the Jewish religion. Many Jews see environmental protection as a central task, as stated in Genesis 2:15: “God placed man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and protect it.” The teachings about the respectful treatment of nature, which are anchored in the Jewish tradition, emphasize that nature is alive and serves people by nourishing them. Harmful handling of the environment can lead to catastrophic consequences, as seen in the story of the Flood.

The Torah, the central scripture in Judaism, not only protects nature, but also makes it clear that humans have responsibility for creation. For example, the animal protection law (Exodus 23:19) states that animals should be treated with care and respect. It notes that water and air pollution cannot be tolerated, reflecting Judaism's centuries-old tradition of environmental protection.
