Citizens' money costs are exploding: over 656 million euros every month!

In Germany, spending on citizens' money is at new heights. The federal government is currently spending around 600 million euros a month on health and nursing care insurance for recipients of citizens' benefit, and the trend is pointing steeply upwards. According to a report by fr.de Statutory health insurance companies are already confronted with a deficit totaling ten billion euros.

The new Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) is committed to fully covering the health costs for citizens' benefit recipients from the federal budget. The monthly flat rate that job centers pay for health insurance is 109 euros. These contributions are necessary to ensure the medical care of citizens' benefit recipients, who are also covered, among other things, for doctor's visits or necessary further training.

Costs at a glance

Overall, monthly expenses for health and nursing care insurance already amount to more than 656 million euros, which corresponds to around 17 percent of the total entitlements of the communities of need. In 2024, the job centers considered a total of 645 million euros for social security in February, and the trend is increasing, as can be seen last year with 581 million euros in December and now 600 million in the current month.

  • Januar 2025: 645 Millionen Euro für Sozialversicherungen
  • Dezember 2024: 581 Millionen Euro
  • Februar 2024: 590 Millionen Euro für Sozialversicherungen bei insgesamt 2,94 Millionen Bedarfsgemeinschaften

However, there are also points that need to be examined critically. Statutory health insurance companies report that the amounts currently granted only cover a third of the actual costs, which raises the need for a comprehensive reassessment. Warken has already discussed proposals to reduce the number of citizens' benefit recipients in order to reduce the financial burden on the system.

Medical care and challenges

An important regulation for those entitled to benefits who are able to work is continued insurance with their previous statutory health insurance company. The job center covers the monthly contributions. However, people who rely on other types of benefits, such as those for relatives who are unable to work, do not have access to statutory health insurance. Decision-makers are faced with the challenge of making the system sustainable in the long term, while voices within the CSU are becoming louder after a fundamental debate about the role of the welfare state. The coming months are likely to be crucial for the further development of the citizen's benefit reform and could possibly also have an impact on social stability in Germany. A good hand and strategic considerations are required in order not to cause the complex structure to falter.
