Drug crime at the main train station: 42-year-old arrested!

On Sunday, June 15, 2025, there was an explosive arrest at Hamm main station. A 42-year-old convicted criminal was picked up by federal police after he was riding a high-quality e-bike. The man had no ID with him and gave false personal details during the check. As [wa.de](https://www.wa.de/hamm/hamm-mitte-ort370531/vom-hauptbahnhof-ins-gefaengnis-42-jaehriger-hat- aktuell-alles-falsch-machen-93787387.html) reports, his attempt to evade arrest failed and he was handcuffed and taken to the police station.

During the check it turned out that the 42-year-old was wanted by the Bielefeld public prosecutor's office for drug trafficking. He still had 427 days left to serve of a three and a half year prison sentence. The e-bike he was traveling with had already been put up for security since it was stolen in Leipzig in 2021.

Search reveals drugs

The search of the man not only uncovered the stolen e-bike, but also a number of other illegal items. Drugs, pyrotechnic materials and a banned knife were seized. As presseportal.de further reports, all of these discoveries will now lead to extensive criminal proceedings against the 42-year-old.

The man was immediately taken to the Hamm correctional facility. As part of a larger security operation, further priority checks took place at the main station on the same weekend. These led to eight search hits and the seizure of four more knives, some of which were banned. Reports of violations of the Cannabis and Medicines Act as well as insults and trespassing were also filed.

Rising drug crime

The incidents in Hamm are part of a larger problem in Germany, where drug-related crime remains high. According to Statista, around 347,000 drug crime cases were recorded in 2023, an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. What is particularly striking is that cannabis cases still make up the majority of drug crimes. Even though cannabis has been partially legalized since April 1, 2024, the proportion of drug trafficking offenses remains significant.

The increased presence of the federal police, especially in the evening and at night, was viewed positively by the station's users. Given the health and social problems associated with the use of illegal drugs, the question remains as to how effective the current measures against the tide of drug-related crime really are.
