Two new speed cameras in the Hochsauerland district: drive safer, speed less!

The Hochsauerlandkreis relies on modern technology to improve traffic safety. Two new speed camera trailers were recently installed, covering both the western and eastern parts of the county. The locations of these mobile speed traps are carefully selected and are based on recommendations from the accident commission as well as information from the public and internal analyses. This is intended to protect busy streets in particular, where residents often demand stationary speed controls. Loud Radio Sauerland The first speed camera trailer, which has been in use since September 2021, has proven to be extremely effective.

The positive effects are clearly visible: road users are proven to adhere better to the prescribed speeds at the measuring points. The speed camera trailers are equipped with a robust and weather-resistant design that allows them to work autonomously, even at night, on weekends or on holidays. In addition, a sealed construction protects against vandalism and theft by lowering the trailer during operation. For longer deployments, the device does not require any personnel effort - an integrated battery guarantees that the trailers can work in the same location for up to 10 days, making them an ideal complement to existing mobile and stationary speed controls.

Technology and Legal

What makes these speed camera trailers so special? The technology they use is based on standardized measuring procedures using laser technology, similar to that used in other mobile speed cameras. The Traffistar S350 from Jenoptik and the Enforcement Trailer from Vitronic are used here. These semi-stationary systems are designed to be particularly robust to better protect them from vandalism and allow them to remain in one place for several days. Another advantage is that the speed measurements are fundamentally valid, even if concerns have been expressed about the measurement data in the past, such as SOS traffic law reported.

As with any speed monitoring system, there is the possibility of appealing against fines if you believe that the measurement was incorrect. Reasons could be defective sensors or unstandardized conditions that make correct measurement impossible. The speed data collected by speed camera trailers is subject to strict legal frameworks that are intended to ensure transparency and fairness.

Costs and fines

The fines for speeding that are detected by the speed camera trailers vary depending on the severity of the violation and range between 30 and 800 euros in urban areas. In the outskirts, the fines range from 20 to 700 euros. Different speed limits apply for drivers with trailers. An overview of the fines for speeding with trailers is shown in the table below:

transgression fine Objection possible
Up to 10 km/h 30€ No
11 – 15 km/h 50€ No
16 – 20 km/h 140€ Yes
21 – 25 km/h 150€ Yes
26 – 30 km/h 175€ Yes, 1 month driving ban
31 – 40 km/h 255€ Yes, 1 month driving ban
41 – 50 km/h 480€ Yes, 1 month driving ban
51 – 60 km/h 600€ Yes, 2 months driving ban
Over 60 km/h 700€ Yes, 3 months driving ban

The new strategy in the Hochsauerland district could significantly improve the traffic situation and ensure more safety on the roads. As always, it is important to drive carefully and considerately, because ultimately it is about our collective safety - and that is priceless.
