License plate stolen: Höxter police are asking for information from Hohenwepel!

In Hohenwepel, more precisely on Peckelsheimer Straße, a not entirely insignificant incident occurred on June 28, 2025: a license plate theft caused a stir. The affected 53-year-old driver from Warburg noticed between 2:53 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. that both the front and rear license plates of his Seat had disappeared. The Höxter police are now initiating criminal proceedings and have put out a search for the license plates in order to track down the perpetrator. Possible witnesses are asked to contact us on 05271/962-1222 or by email to poststelle.hoexter@polizei.nrw.de. Anyone who provides information outside of office hours can contact the Höxter police control center, which can also be reached at the same telephone number. It is hoped that the investigation will quickly clear up the incident.

According to current police reports, this is not the first incident of this kind in the region. More and more people have become victims of such thefts. According to a publication by the BKA, the proportion of theft crimes has fallen, but the numbers still remain worrying. In 2024, a total of around 5.8 million crimes were registered, of which over 1.94 million were thefts, which corresponds to almost a third of all crimes. Interestingly, theft crime and its investigation decreased compared to previous years. There was a significant decline in theft crimes, particularly during the Corona pandemic. But after the pandemic, numbers rose temporarily before falling 1.6% last year. These falling values are a ray of hope, but also show that the issue of theft must still be the focus of the authorities. As an example, the BKA states that the clearance rate for thefts was only 31.4% and that there is therefore potential for improvement.

Decrease in theft crime

The development of theft crimes remains an important issue for the security authorities. Despite the decrease of 1.6% in 2024 compared to 2023, the value is still above the pre-Corona level of 2019. Thefts are a serious problem that also directly affects citizens in Warburg and the surrounding area. As the incident in Hohenwepel shows, even seemingly small crimes can have a major impact on those affected. The BKA highlights that 52% of theft crimes go unreported, which suggests that many people, like the Seat owner, hope that they will not be alone as victims and that the perpetrators will be caught.

Finally, it should be noted that the authorities continue to rely on citizens' help. Anyone who becomes suspicious or feels uncomfortable in their surroundings should not hesitate to contact the police. The community can contribute greatly to increasing feelings of security and reducing crime.
