B220: Planned closure between Kleve and Emmerich – summer holiday chaos!

The city of Kleve is facing a major construction site that will affect federal highway 220 (B220) from Monday, July 14th. The closure extends from the Emmericher Straße/L8 Oraniendeich junction to the town of Kleve-Warbeyen. This measure is part of the extensive renovation work that is necessary to repair the B220 Emmericher Straße. The direct connection between the Rhine bridge in Emmerich and Kleve will be interrupted for the entire duration of the construction work.

One thing is clear: There will be a diversion that will already be signposted on site. Drivers must expect a detour that takes them via the L8 Oraniendeich, Tweestrom and the B9 Klever Ring. This diversion can lead to longer travel times between Emmerich and Kleve, so it's better to plan a time buffer! The construction work is expected to last until the end of August, in line with the end of the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia. In comparison, another construction site in the region, which began in April, took a little longer at the intersection on the Kleve side of the Rhine - completion was postponed to ensure the quality of the work, reports Straßen NRW.

Renovation progress and effects

The renovation of the Rhine bridge and the associated intersection areas is extensive and entails more than just local traffic changes. Intensive work has already been carried out on the western and eastern arms of the crossing over the last few months, with work concentrating on the areas on the left and right of the Rhine during the summer holidays. Pedestrians and cyclists also have to be prepared for diversions that are signposted along farm roads in the Rhine meadows.

Current information on other construction sites in the area can be viewed at Verkehrslage. Although the data listed there does not reveal anything about acute dangers such as the risk of slipping or other traffic disruptions, temporary closures can lead to stumbling blocks in the flow of traffic.

Although construction sites are often a nuisance, it is important to recognize the need for these maintenance measures. After all, we all want our roads to remain safe and in good condition. So don't let the construction work bother you and plan your trips accordingly so that everything runs smoothly.
