Ford starts battery production in Cologne – electric car revolution begins!

Ford has taken an important step into the future of electric mobility. The automobile manufacturer has started producing high-voltage batteries for electric cars in the former engine factory in Cologne. The new batteries are intended for the “Explorer” and “Capri” models, which are manufactured in the neighboring, purpose-built “Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center”. In this way, Ford is bringing a breath of fresh air into the city and at the same time can optimize local production.

The new production facility has been extensively modernized and equipped to meet the challenges of electromobility. Around 2,775 individual parts are assembled into a drive battery in an impressive production line of around two kilometers. Each battery module weighs around 30 kilograms, and a total of 180 robots are used to make assembly efficient. These little helpers ensure that the battery housings are welded, glued and screwed optimally, which standardizes the manufacturing process and reduces the error rate.

With an eye on the region, Ford has not only expanded production but also simplified logistics. The proximity to the company's own production of electric vehicles shortens transport routes significantly and brings with it enormous efficiency advantages. In times of change and in view of changing automotive demand, this is a decisive advantage, especially for a location that has recently been under pressure as electric variants have so far been selling slowly.

Ford's decision to set up a battery production facility in the heart of Cologne also speaks to the company's long-term commitment to Germany. Ford has been active in this country for almost 100 years, and vehicles have been produced at the Cologne site since 1931. As the Battery News emphasizes, the new production line not only increases productivity, but also makes an important contribution to sustainable mobility.

Compared to other manufacturers, such as Volkswagen, who are making massive investments in their electric car production, Ford shows that traditional car manufacturers are also taking the transition to electric mobility seriously. Volkswagen plans to sell around 22 million electric vehicles by 2028 and has already taken big steps into electric mobility by converting its factories to electric production. The Electroauto News report on the considerable effort that the automobile giant is investing in the conversion and training of employees.

Overall, the opening of the battery production facility in Cologne shows that Ford has a good knack for asserting itself in the rapidly developing automotive industry. With innovative technologies and a clear focus on the future of electromobility, the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center is well on its way to becoming a major player in the market.
