Shocking accident in Krefeld: Five children injured while fleeing a brawl

An unfortunate incident occurred in Krefeld on Saturday evening in which a car plowed into a group of people. The accident happened around 8:40 p.m. on the corner of Südstrasse and Tannenstrasse and was probably in the context of a previous fight. A total of five people were injured, including two small children aged 1 and 2. All of the injured, including two 25-year-olds and a 52-year-old, were immediately taken to the hospital, as WDR reports.

The escaped car, a white Peugeot 208 with an Essen license plate, was found a short time later on Kölner Straße. The car was parked with the windows and doors open when police found three men aged 24, 28 and 29. Investigators suspect the men are involved in the incident because they fled in the vehicle after the fight. The 28-year-old driver was arrested because there was already an arrest warrant against him. The other two men were taken to the police station to give a blood sample, while they stated that they were not the driver, as DerWesten reports.

The background to the incident

Police are currently carrying out a comprehensive investigation into the exact circumstances of the accident and fight. It remains particularly unclear who actually drove the car and whether the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol consumption among young people is a known problem that needs to be taken seriously when it comes to road safety. According to a study by the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), male young people are twice as likely to drive while intoxicated and experience three times more dangerous situations and accidents than their female counterparts, as BASt states.

A poignant statistic shows that 27 percent of young people surveyed experienced at least one dangerous traffic situation under the influence of alcohol before their 18th birthday. This danger, especially for children and young people, is tragically reflected in the current events in Krefeld. The authorities strongly warn about the consequences of drunk driving and the need to take preventative measures.

The events at the weekend in Krefeld should wake us all up. It is important to speak publicly about the responsible use of alcohol and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future. The police are continuing to investigate in order to shed light on the matter and bring those responsible to justice.
