Successful restoration: LSG Lippe-Südost brings DG-300 back into the air!

The Lippe-Südost air sports community (LSG) has set up an exciting project in the last few months. The club members have dedicated themselves to the comprehensive restoration of a damaged glider, the DG-300. The project was able to be realized thanks to the support of Sparkasse Paderborn-Detmold-Höxter, which supported the project as part of its “Sparkassenspende” campaign. The new appearance of the aircraft, which has been given a fresh Sparkasse design and shines in bright Sparkasse red, not only brings color but also a lot of pride into the ranks of the LSG.

The history of the DG-300 is marked by challenges. After a minor accident, the aircraft was badly damaged and its condition initially left little hope of it being used in the near future. Nevertheless, the 21 members of the LSG, aged 14 to 86, were not discouraged and invested around 330 hours in the repair. These technical skills achieved and the team spirit that was strengthened are just as much a part of the project as the multitude of jobs that had to be completed.

A look at the repair work

During the extensive restoration work, the DG-300 experienced a major extension of its lifespan. In order to repair the damage, such as the dented fuselage, the broken parts and the damaged landing gear, many work steps were necessary. This included, among other things, sanding, laminating, painting and assembling the various parts. The list of defects was long and ranged from a fuselage bow that was damaged by an external landing to defective bearing blocks and a damaged canopy.

The LSG workshop in Blomberg became the central location of the revival. Spare parts were ordered here and the entire repair was carried out step by step. After loving care and meticulous work, such as applying the new paint in seven thin layers, the DG-300 now shines in new splendor.

What's next?

But the LSG Lippe-Südost is not resting on its laurels. The restoration of another aircraft, the PIK20D, is already in full swing. In the coming weeks, the members will also demonstrate their skills and take care of the restoration. The enthusiasm for flying and the shared exchange of knowledge about aircraft construction and repairs attracts all age groups and creates enormous cohesion within the club.

Another positive result of the restoration work is that the DG-300 can now be used as a training aircraft for advanced student pilots. Before taking to the skies, however, there is still a technical inspection to be carried out, during which the aircraft is measured, weighed and checked. All of these measures show that the LSG Lippe-Südost is not only active in aviation, but also operates with a strong sense of community and a good knack for craft projects.
