Pig breeding scandal in Halver: Greens demand radical clarification!

A recently uncovered animal welfare scandal is causing quite a stir in the Märkisches Kreis. The district council faction ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS has called for comprehensive clarification after alarming revelations about serious grievances in a pig breeding farm in Halver-Hohenplanken. The animal protection organization ANINOVA documented frightening conditions in October and published distressing images of injured and dead animals as well as massive hygiene deficiencies. These images, which clearly show the animals' suffering, have revealed a massive failure in animal protection, according to Marjan Eggers, the leader of the Green Party in the district council, who is demanding clear clarification of the circumstances.

According to reports, the veterinary office was informed about the poor housing conditions and had already given the company conditions that were classified as fulfilled according to later follow-up inspections. Paolino Barone, co-chair of the Green group, criticized the repeated monitoring of the grievances and questioned why they had not been remedied earlier. The Greens are now calling for a comprehensive review of the veterinary office's inspection practices and the withdrawal of the inspections in order to restore trust in animal welfare.

Education and control practice

In their official request to District Administrator Ralf Schwarzkopf, the Greens demand information about the frequency and results of previous inspections, deficiencies identified, requirements imposed and the reasons for the lack of a ban on keeping animals. This request was formulated in close coordination with the local branch of the Greens in Halver and reflects the great interest in transparency and responsibility. The Dortmund public prosecutor's office has already begun investigations into possible violations of the Animal Welfare Act, which underlines the serious nature of the allegations.

But why is the issue of animal protection so important in current society? As numerous data show, animal husbandry in Germany is viewed critically. Loud Statista Millions of animals are slaughtered in Germany every year and the discussion about animal welfare is lively. There are clear minimum standards, especially when it comes to livestock farming, but these are constantly criticized. Consumers are increasingly placing value on animal welfare, which is also reflected in the demand for organic products and cruelty-free items.

Criticism and responsibility

In light of recent events, it appears that consumers are becoming more aware of animal suffering and animal welfare. According to a 2021 survey, around 50 percent of respondents are willing to pay more money for meat products if it improves animal welfare. Overall, around 8.3 percent of private donations in Germany went to animal protection in 2023, which shows the relevance of this topic.

The revelations about the grievances in Halver are a wake-up call for all actors - from politics to the authorities to consumers. It is important to steer a clear course in animal protection and to enable the affected animals to live a better life. Those responsible are now required to act and strengthen trust in the control mechanisms. This is the only way to ensure that such scandals will be a thing of the past in the future.
