Mettmann's Tafel is moving: a new home for those in need!
The Diakonie in the Düsseldorf-Mettmann church district has found a new home for the Mettmanner Tafel. The upcoming move to the building at Ötzbachstrasse 1 has been confirmed. After many years in its previous location on “Am Hügel”, the food bank will now be housed in the new premises that the city of Mettmann has acquired. The Diakonie has been preparing this move over the last few months together with the public, who have contributed numerous ideas and offers of support. The city promised its support early on, which made things run smoothly, as mettmanner.de reports.
The current location was no longer usable, highlighting the urgency of the move. Simon Wilde, the director of the table, is optimistic about the new solution and the support of the Protestant community. “We are very grateful for the support of the city and the outgoing mayor Sandra Pietschmann,” he says about the situation. The lease for the new premises has already been signed and work is now underway to prepare for the move.
An important social offer
Since its founding in 2005, Tafel Mettmann has helped many low-income people by distributing donated food and hygiene products. Over 800 families and individuals are entitled to take advantage of the food bank's offerings. Many pensioners and single parents in particular use the support of the Tafel, which relies on citizens and companies contributing with donations and voluntary work. The food bank relies on monetary donations to cover fixed costs such as rent and energy. Those interested can find further information on the [Diakonie Kreis Mettmann] website (https://www.diakonie-kreis-mettmann.de/tafel-mettmann/).
The Tafel's helpers make a valuable contribution every day by collecting, sorting and distributing food and hygiene products. This service would not be possible without the over 60 volunteers who are responsible for transport, storage and distribution. These volunteers are the heart of the food bank and make a significant contribution to helping people in need in difficult life situations.
A network of support
The Diakonie is not only committed to the food bank and offers many other social offerings that specifically support families and migrants who have reached the limits of their possibilities. The wide range of assistance services extends from child and youth welfare to care services for older people and people in need of care. These various projects are designed to open up perspectives for people in need. The goal is to promote a community of solidarity in which everyone receives the help they need. This also includes Diakonie's commitment to social innovations in order to solve social problems, as described on the website of the Diakonie Bundesstiftung.
The move of the Mettmanner Tafel to the new premises at Ötzbachstrasse 1 is therefore not just a voluntary change of location, but a step towards a positive future for the numerous people who rely on the support of the Tafel. With this decision, the city of Mettmann also shows how important social services are for the common good.
