Greens support Knappmeyer: A new departure for Lübbecke!

In a recent development, the local Greens association, led by Frank Dobrileit, has announced its support for SPD mayoral candidate Philipp Knappmeyer. This happened after intensive discussions and a comprehensive assessment of the political situation in Lübbecke. Dobrileit emphasizes that Knappmeyer has the best qualifications to make the city fit for the future, and the support reflects the political convictions and interests of the voters. That's how it reports Westfalen-Blatt.

Knappmeyer, the Social Democrats' designated mayoral candidate, has already turned to the public to present a package of measures for inner city development. At an on-site meeting with representatives of the WL, FDP and other parties, he presented concrete steps that are intended to combat the vacancy crisis and create new perspectives. Looking at the city center, Knappmeyer explained that the closure of many shops is a serious sign of the pressure that smaller towns like Lübbecke are facing. The plan is to offer the city center not only retail and gastronomy, but also cultural, non-consumption options and public services. Details about the planned measures can be found on Knappmeyer's official homepage: philipp-knappmeyer.de.

Innovative ideas for the city center

In recent years, Lübbecke has already created essential structural requirements to improve the quality of life in the city center. The specific projects include, among other things, the expansion of the offerings on the market square, which will be supplemented by evening markets and seasonal furnishings as well as play equipment. There will also be a temporary curling rink in the winter months to provide additional entertainment.

An ambitious project is the development of the media library into a “third place”, where events will take place in the summer and an arthouse cinema will be offered on the upper floor. Local gastronomy should also benefit from the planned activities through cooperation. The FDP parliamentary group leader Andreas Eickmeier also made a proposal for a public toilet facility, which would certainly be a useful addition given the demands on city center services.

Improving accessibility for cyclists is another key concern. The development of the Geistwall into a cycle priority route should help make the city center even more attractive. The conversion of a bushy wasteland between Geistwall and adjacent streets into a small park is also on the list. The Königsmühlen area will ultimately be converted into a residential and commercial district, which will bring additional stimulus to the local economy.

Challenges of the inner cities

The transformation processes that are currently taking place in many German city centers are comprehensive and require persistent efforts on the part of municipalities. According to that German Cities Day Inner cities are under considerable pressure to change. This phenomenon is not only caused by changing shopping habits and the corona pandemic, but also by new trends in leisure activities. The attractiveness of inner-city areas therefore requires creative ideas and ongoing measures to provide the hearts of cities with the necessary development.

Knappmeyer's activities and the support from the Greens show that there is a will in Lübbecke to promote positive and future-oriented urban development. The cooperation of all parties represented on the council accelerates this process and could soon lead to Lübbecke being considered an exemplary city for successful inner-city development.
