Creative engagement with the end of life: events in November

In November everything in Borchen revolves around the topics of life, death and coming to terms with one's own transience. The Kirchborchen working group “Old Church – Rethought” has launched an exciting series of events in cooperation with Maria Leifeld, the coordinator of the outpatient hospice service AchtsamZeit Paderborn. The occasion is the memorial days such as All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, which invite us to look within ourselves and think about life. The working group would like to find creative ways to deal with the end of one's own life, as borchen.de reports to us.

The series offers interesting formats for anyone interested. A series of events begins on Monday at 7:00 p.m. with specialist lectures that deal with the last phase of life and encourage reflection. The exhibition “(M)a suitcase for the last journey”, which can be visited after every Sunday service, is also very popular. Here visitors can creatively explore their own wishes and ideas about the end of life. In addition, there will be three church music devotionals on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. that will shed light on the topic of “death and transience” with readings and musical contributions.

A look at Johann Heinrich Füssli

Another inspiring aspect for November is the examination of art and its influence on our lives. In this context, Johann Heinrich Füssli, who was born on February 7, 1741 in Zurich and died in London in 1825, often comes into play. Füssli was not only a painter, but also an art historian and writer, whose works have a strong emotional character and are considered a forerunner of Romanticism. He was known for his dramatic depictions and the combination of classicist and mannerist elements with the influence of English painting. The Swiss artist created works that amaze us and make us think about human emotions. Füssli's best-known works, such as “The Nightmare” and “Lady Macbeth”, still impress today with their depth and emotionality, as is described in detail in the article from Wikipedia.

Global connections and challenges

But it's not just in Borchen that people think about ephemeral topics. Approaches to solutions are also important at a global level, especially when it comes to... Belt and Road Initiative China, which was launched in 2013. The initiative aims to strengthen transcontinental connections and cooperation, which has a profound impact on the trade and investment dynamics of different countries.

Empirical research by the World Bank highlights both the opportunities and risks of this initiative. While completed projects in BRI corridor countries could potentially bring positive effects such as reduced travel times and increased trade, there are also serious concerns about debt risks and governance issues. Successful implementation requires deep policy reforms to strengthen transparency and trade opportunities while minimizing environmental and social risks.

In these turbulent times, be it on local or global terrain, the upcoming events in Borchen invite you to reflect on your own place in life and also to think beyond the boundaries of life. If you would like to find out more about the events, you can find the details in the flyer or on the website of the EWB parish association.
