Dramatic accident on A1: 7 vehicles collided in ice and fog!
Early on Saturday morning there was a serious traffic accident on the A1 between the Ahlhorner Heide triangle and the Wildeshausen-West junction. According to om-online.de, the accident was caused around 4 a.m. under extreme conditions of slippery conditions and fog. The Oldenburg control center alerted the emergency services from the Cloppenburg and Vechta districts in order to be at the scene of the accident quickly.
Initial reports reported five vehicles were involved, but it emerged that a total of seven vehicles were involved in the collision. The person who caused the accident, a 43-year-old Belgian, was obviously driving too fast for the weather conditions and skidded. His car crashed into the center guard rail, which triggered a chain reaction. A 54-year-old driver from Recklinghausen had to brake sharply, which led to further collisions, including a 22-year-old man from the Netherlands and a 59-year-old driver from Tecklenburg.
Injured and evacuation
The Wildeshausen fire department had already warned in advance due to extremely icy conditions. The rescue workers had difficulty moving because the road was icy. The fire department provided initial medical care and secured the scene of the accident. A total of four injuries were reported, including a 55-year-old passenger whose injuries were classified as minor. All injured people were taken to a hospital for outpatient treatment.
Initially the number of injured was given as 13, but this was quickly corrected to four. The motorway in the direction of Bremen remained completely closed until around 7 a.m. while six vehicles had to be towed away. The total damage from the accident is estimated at around 70,000 euros.
Safety precautions and traffic accidents
Such incidents are not unusual, as polizei-schweiz.ch also notes. The A1 is the longest motorway in Switzerland, running from Geneva to the Austrian border. Despite safety precautions, traffic accidents regularly occur here, especially in adverse weather conditions. Numerous accidents were recorded there in 2019 and the cantonal police recommend defensive driving to avoid such situations.
Statistics show that the number of traffic accidents in Switzerland is also high. In 2019, around 18,000 accidents were registered in Switzerland alone, many of which resulted in injuries. These figures illustrate the importance of safety measures on the roads and how drivers deal with difficult driving conditions such as those currently prevailing on the A1.
For those traveling on the highway, the recommendation remains to always drive carefully and attentively, especially in bad weather conditions. This way you can minimize the risk of accidents and dangerous situations.
