Borgelt sprints to victory: 2025 city run under pouring rain!

On October 6, 2025, the city of Soest was in a state of emergency because the 33rd Marathon Soest city run attracted numerous participants and spectators. In wet conditions and the constant rain that accompanied the event, athletes fought for the best times and victory. Julian Borgelt from LC Paderborn won the ten-kilometer run with a lead of 45 seconds and finished the route in 32 minutes and 26 seconds. In the women's race, Luciene Cramer was able to shine again - her ninth victory in this event confirmed her skills with a time of 43 minutes.

The weather conditions added to the challenge and many participants, particularly students, got thoroughly soaked. Nevertheless, the atmosphere at the event was great. Mayor Dr. Eckhard Ruthemeyer, who was made an honorary member of Marathon Soest, rang the starting bell for the Bambini runs with great joy. In the next edition it will be his successor, Marcus Schiffer, who also took part in the ten-kilometer run and finished 91st in 52 minutes.

Placements and competition

For the women, Melanie Bissa and Katharina Meisterernst took second and third places in the ten-kilometer run, while for the men, Yannick Schönfeldt and Maximilian Paulsen took second and third place on the podium. Last year's winner Nico Schulte had to be content with fourth place this year.

However, the competitions were not just limited to the longer distances. The 4000 meter run was won by Julia Wulf for women, followed by Emma Niehues and Ines Rustemeyer. Kai Buddenberg prevailed among the men, supported by Massimo Lupisella and Lennart Reinecke. In addition, a team from Wasserfreunde Soest won the relay race, which wonderfully underlined the local connection and team spirit.

Interesting facts about athletics

Athletics has a long tradition in Germany and is very popular. Around 7.9 million people show great interest in this sport. The discipline combines various running, jumping and throwing skills and always attracts large audiences at Olympics and international championships. But it's not just the elite who have their place - popular sports are also booming: around seven million Germans enjoy running in their free time, with the German Athletics Association (DLV) recording more women than men members in 2024 , as Statista reports.

With its more than 793,000 members, the DLV is the sixth largest sports association in Germany and is therefore very important in the sports landscape. Current stars like Armand Duplantis and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone represent the diversity of disciplines and the high level of motivation within the sport. Usain Bolt, who holds the world records for 100 and 200 meters, and Florence Griffith-Joyner, who has held a record for 100 meters since 1988, also show how athletically valuable and exciting athletics can be.

The participants in the city run in Soest have sent a strong message: no matter whether it is rain or cold, the love for sport remains unbroken. The Soester Anzeiger reports that the city run will continue to play an important role in the future in order to continue to promote this enthusiasm for athletics in the region.
