Youngest artist in Soest: Michel M. and the new art scene!

Today we are introducing you to an up-and-coming artist who is bringing a breath of fresh air into the Cologne art scene: Michel M. is the newest member of the Graf Yorck studio community in Echtrop. Originally working in Soest, he recently moved into his studio in the former common room. This creative ensemble of nine artists uses former commercial spaces designed by Dr. Franz Alfert was provided by Atex Explosionsschutz GmbH on favorable terms. You can find names like Michael Lange, Harald Broerken, and Sinisa Lordan there, all of whom are long-time acquaintances from the time of the studio in the former BEM Adam barracks.

Michel M. not only brings fresh ideas, but also interesting professional experience as a graphic designer. With his pencil drawings, which often deal with elements of the anatomical skeleton, he creates works that are available until November 16th Wilhelm Morgner Museum can be seen in the exhibition “undetermined truths”. He takes a critical look at the definition of art and emphasizes the need for disciplined work to achieve true artistic knowledge.

An exciting event program

The museum offers a diverse program as part of the exhibition. On September 23rd there was a conversation between Michel M. and moderator Michael Stockhausen in which the meaning of drawings in today's world was discussed. The focus was on topics such as the relationship between reason and art as well as the artist's unique visual worlds. Michel M. has also developed his own drawing methods that set him apart from others.

Another highlight is the museum tour on October 14th, led by Dr. Martina Padberg, director of the Ahlen Art Museum. Here we will not only talk about Michel M.'s work, but also about the Wilhelm Morgner Prize 2025, whose jury is Dr. Padberg belongs. It will offer interesting insights into the background of the prize while ten artists present their works.

Creativity for the whole family

An attractive program package awaits visitors at the upcoming Family Day, which will take place on November 2nd. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. there is a lot to discover in the Wilhelm Morgner Museum, from drawing and painting to hands-on activities. Under the motto “Church, Kings and Art”, creative minds, no matter how big or small, can pick up a pencil and bring their visual worlds to life.

The extensive examination of contemporary art, as presented in the museum, not only reflects current trends, but also provides information about the cultural and economic structures behind art production. An example of this is the documenta in Kassel, which is considered the most important exhibition for contemporary art. Michel M.'s works open up a piece of this discussion and show that art is more than just a form of expression. It contains depths to explore and exciting potential for the future.

Michel M. and his colleagues in the Graf Yorck studio community know that art is hard work. It doesn't stand still, but is constantly evolving - and that inspires not only the artists themselves, but also all art lovers in Cologne and beyond.
