In the afternoon, the suspect appeared again at the bus station, where he was approached by police officers. Despite his claim that he was not responsible for the crime, the video recordings proved the opposite. During his search, the police found not only the perfume but also a folding knife and drugs in his backpack. It also turned out that there was an arrest warrant for him, which led to his arrest.
Growing problems with shoplifting
Given the current crime statistics, it is clear that this case is not an isolated event. The number of shoplifting cases in Germany rose by more than 23 percent to over 426,000 cases in 2023 Retail.de reported. This frightening increase has prompted the German Retail Association (HDE) to urgently call for more consistent measures to combat shoplifting. Many shoplifting cases go undetected or are not reported, which results in a high number of unreported cases, estimated at over 90 percent.
Frustration among retailers is growing because reporting against shoplifters is often ineffective. HDE Managing Director Stefan Genth emphasizes that shoplifting is not a trivial matter but causes significant damage to companies. The losses add up to several billion euros every year.
Effects on the perpetrator
For the 43-year-old man, this now means not only a charge of theft, but also of possession of drugs and a folding knife. It remains to be seen whether the ongoing proceedings and the evidence collected will play a role in the judicial decision-making. What is certain, however, is that the justice system will send a clear message based on his criminal record and the arrest warrant.
