Bayer 04: Historic football game and superiority in the league!

November 1, 2025 brings memories of exciting football moments of the past. A look back reveals how Bayer 04 performed on the pitch exactly 75 years ago. The 1950/51 season set the course for future success and consolidated the club's place in the 2nd Oberliga West.

As bayer04.de reports, the pitch was in poor condition at the time - deep and uneven, which had a major impact on the game. Long balls dominated the game, which had no notable highlights in the first half. Richard Job, nicknamed “Offside Job” in this game, was repeatedly called back for offside positions. It wasn't until the 65th minute that he scored the opening goal with an impressive flying header after a precise cross from Theo Kirchberg.

Exciting twists and strong performances

The final phase of the game belonged entirely to Bayer 04. The team not only showed superior fitness, but also a variety of scoring opportunities. Hans Flohr caused a stir when he missed a penalty, but just five minutes later he made it 2-0. A clear victory that cemented Bayer 04 as league leaders and initiated a two-week league break.

But that wasn't all. On October 12th there was a friendly match against TuS Neuendorf, which was attended by 4,000 spectators. Bayer 04 initially fell behind, but fought back: Emil Becks equalized and a penalty from Hans Steingans gave them a 2-1 lead. The team's morale and playful class underlined their path to first division.

The next exciting appearance took place on October 19th against Fortuna Cologne on a difficult ground. Bayer 04 were already leading 3-0 at half-time, with goals from Karl-Heinz Spikofski, Peter Röger and Theo Kirchberg. In the second half, the team went one better and scored four more goals, which resulted in a debacle for their opponents: the final score was 7:1. A real shooting festival!

On the road to success

The following week brought a friendly match against VfL Leverkusen, in which 3,000 spectators cheered the team on to a 6-1 victory despite the use of a B team. On October 24th, four days later, the regular team played against Union Krefeld. With just one goal, scored by Paul Wiorek in the 3rd minute, Bayer 04 secured a 1-0 win, their seventh win in a row.

Overall, Bayer 04 consolidated its position at the top of the 2nd Oberliga West table after 13 games. A clear demonstration of the potential and determination of the team, which featured a variety of different playing styles and continually surprised.

The impressive performances from the past are not only important for the club's history, but also show how strongly Bayer 04 is rooted in the region. And this fits seamlessly into Bayer's development story, which now covers wide-ranging subject areas such as allergies, cardiology and many more, as bayer.com makes clear. An interplay of tradition, sport and medical innovation that continues to exist and grow.

On to the next round! The story of Bayer 04 will continue to be written in the coming months - we will be excited to see what new chapters will be added.
