15-year-old falls while trying to escape control: passenger injured!

On October 30, 2025, there was great terror on the streets of Langerwehe when a 15-year-old driver from Eschweiler and his 15-year-old pillion passenger from Düren were involved in an accident. The incident occurred on Josef-Schwarz-Straße when the police were conducting a traffic stop. In a desperate attempt to evade control, the driver accelerated his moped but lost control and fell.

To make matters worse, the pillion passenger was not wearing a protective helmet. While the fall fortunately only resulted in minor injuries to the pillion passenger, the police were quickly on site to clarify the matter. As Heinsberg Magazin reports, property damage of around 200 euros is suspected. The moped itself was also technically manipulated and drove faster than the permitted 25 km/h. The driver only had a moped test certificate and is now facing criminal proceedings for driving without a license.

The risk of mobility

The increasing mobility of young people aged around 15, which goes hand in hand with the acquisition of moped and moped driving licenses, poses some risks. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the frequency of accidents in this age group is worrying. It has been proven that young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 are particularly affected. In 2024, 319 of them died in road traffic, which corresponds to 11.5% of all traffic fatalities, as BMV explains.

The Langerwehe incident should be an important lesson for all young drivers and their parents. Traffic education offerings, such as the online series “The Law of the Road” or the “REALLY NOW?” campaign, address the risks of accidents caused by distraction, especially through smartphones. Virtual reality is increasingly being used to realistically simulate dangerous situations so that young people can develop alternative options for action.

Education and security

Road safety for young people is a top priority. Programs such as “Young + Safe + Ready to Go” aim to reduce the risk of accidents, especially in the late evening hours, and organize practical exercises in schools. There is also the option for young adults to start accompanied driving from 17 onwards at the age of 16 ½, which provides additional security.

For all those who love speed, the “TUNE IT SAFE” initiative offers driving safety training for tuning-loving young people. These events take place in six driving safety centers in Germany and are intended to raise awareness of the dangers in road traffic.

In view of these developments, it is to be hoped that accidents like the one in Langerwehe will sensitize young people. Because safety comes first – both on two and four wheels.
