Education about psychoses: film series shows the way to healing”
At the end of June, the InKinosion network started a new season of its inclusive film series in Königsburg Süchteln. For around 40 guests, this evening was not only a cinematic highlight, but also an opportunity to discuss important topics of mental health. Among those present were nursing trainees from the LVR Clinic in Viersen, who were able to gain valuable insights from the event. The touching feature film “The Forest in Me” by Sebastian Fritzsch was shown and impressively deals with the challenges of psychological crises, love and excessive demands.
After the film screening, it was time for an open discussion. Axel S., an experienced conversation partner and prospective recovery companion in the EX-IN program, shared his personal experiences with psychoses, especially hearing voices. Moderated by Dirk Kampmeier, an insightful exchange developed in which Axel S. recommended to those present the importance of social contacts, fellow patients and self-help groups. He showed how important dialogue and empathy are for the healing process.
Individual experiences and empowerment
In the discussion, Axel S. gave clear answers to questions about the development of psychoses and the role of medication. He also focused on family interaction and various forms of support. He particularly emphasized that first-hand experience is essential in psychosocial work. “We have to promote exchange and education,” he said. Such events underline how important it is to talk openly about mental illnesses and to develop an understanding for those affected.
This type of exchange is supported by self-help groups, which make a decisive contribution to the inclusion of people with mental illnesses. Loud psychiatrie.de Self-help groups often arise out of need and the search for support. In these groups, not only do the attitudes of those affected change, but the feeling of powerlessness is also overcome. They promote hope, willingness to change and personal responsibility. The members are not alone; they are actively working to overcome their problems.
Education and awareness raising
Following on from this, it is also important that initiatives such as InKinosion's film series and the experiences of the moderators and participants serve to educate society about mental illnesses. The challenge is to break down prejudices and create an environment in which those affected feel safe and heard.
The event once again showed how necessary such formats are to promote not only understanding but also compassion. Only through open exchange can positive change in society be achieved. The value of self-help and support is becoming apparent, and perhaps this is a step in the right direction for many who are still in the dark about their personal struggles.
