Renovation of the K3: Warendorf and Everswinkel receive a new coat of paint!
A lot is happening in the area of transport infrastructure in Warendorf! On September 3, 2025, the head of the traffic department, Michael Ottmann, mayor Peter Horstmann and district administrator Dr. Olaf Gericke informed us about the renovation of Kreisstraße 3 (K3), which represents an important connection between Warendorf and Everswinkel. This road is used by many commuters but is in a dilapidated condition with potholes, cracks and ruts significantly affecting travel.
The parallel cycle path, which can be used by tourists and commuters, is also not doing well. Root damage is noticeable here, which endangers the safety of cyclists. To improve the situation, the renovation was started in August 2023 and is expected to be completed by Christmas 2023. The cycle path will not be reopened until spring 2024, with the total costs for the renovation work amounting to 8.3 million euros, of which 5.81 million euros will be funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Current construction phases
The first construction phase between Everswinkel and the bridge over the Mussenbach has already been completed. The second construction phase, which leads towards Warendorf, is now approaching and will start in August 2025. These renovation measures have become necessary because the K3 has suffered more and more from damage recently and a full closure from August 4th was unavoidable for drivers. Diversions via the K19 and B64 have been put in place to ensure traffic can continue to flow. For cyclists, farm roads are provided as detours, although these may have uneven road conditions.
District Administrator Dr. Olaf Gericke also presented an innovative process for recycling old road surfaces that uses a special cement mixture. Not only do you want to save time and money, but you also want to make a positive contribution to environmental protection. Ultimately, the aim is to build in a more environmentally friendly way, which is reflected in the construction work through the new process.
Infrastructure investments in North Rhine-Westphalia
The renovation of the K3 is just one part of a broader initiative. North Rhine-Westphalia plans to invest a total of around 600 million euros in transport infrastructure by 2025. These funds should, among other things, flow into the maintenance of state roads and the expansion of cycle paths. A considerable amount of 231 million euros has been earmarked for the maintenance of state roads alone. In addition, around 39.5 million euros are earmarked for cycle path projects, which underlines the importance of this type of transport.
In this way, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is not only doing justice to road safety, but is also trying to make mobility more environmentally friendly by promoting initiatives for cyclists and other road users. Mayor Sebastian Seidel and District Administrator Dr. Olaf Gericke therefore emphasizes the immense importance of the renovation work currently underway and expects that residents and commuters will soon feel the positive effects of the improvements. We can remain curious to see how the situation on site will develop!
