Election marathon in Drensteinfurt: First council meets after the election!
On November 2, 2025, just a few weeks after the exciting local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the new council factions will be faced with the challenge of rearranging their personnel. As wn.de reports, the first council meeting of the new electoral period will take place tomorrow, November 3rd, at 6 p.m. in the Alte Post. The election marathon, which began on September 14th this year, brought with it some surprises.
Particularly noteworthy was the voter turnout of 56.8 percent, which fell by 4.9 percent compared to the last election. The decline could have various causes, including the ongoing discussion about political stability in the region. All German and EU citizens aged 16 and over who lived in a municipality for at least 16 days were eligible to vote. Unlike in the federal elections, there was no 5 percent threshold, which made entry easier for smaller parties.
Election results and faction compositions
The results were sobering for some parties. The CDU won 1,205 seats, which corresponds to 33.3 percent of the vote, and lost eight seats compared to the previous election. The SPD won 827 seats and lost 86, while the AfD jumped from 366 seats to 552 seats and 14.5 percent of the vote with a remarkable gain. The Greens, in contrast, suffered a severe loss of 239 seats and only took 13.5 percent of the vote with 466 seats. In addition, new groups such as the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance and Volt managed to enter the council, further diversifying the political landscape.

A turbulent election year
The elections took place not only in the shadow of a decline in voter turnout, but also during a difficult time for some candidates. Tragically, there were several deaths among AfD candidates that dramatically influenced the political landscape. In addition, Iris Stalzer, the elected mayor of Herdecke, was tragically murdered on October 7, 2025. Such events cast a shadow over the political mood and present the new factions with a particular challenge.
Now that the first specialist committee meetings are just around the corner, it will be exciting to see how the political structures in North Rhine-Westphalia develop and what decisions the new elected officials will make. The upcoming council meeting on Monday could set the first course for the future direction of the political landscape. There's something going on in the city - and citizens are excited to see what the next steps will bring.
