At the same time, the EU Commission is preparing a comprehensive package of sanctions against Russia.

Merz is open to peace negotiations, even without a prior ceasefire, as long as an agreement can be reached quickly. He emphasizes that the USA is ready to provide security guarantees for Ukraine. The challenges are immense, and Zelensky is faced with the task of securing the support of his European neighbors without harming Ukraine's interests.

Zelensky, who was inaugurated as Ukraine's first Jewish president on May 20, 2019, is a man of action. He caused a political upheaval by dissolving parliament and calling new elections. He had previously taken decisive steps to reshape Ukraine's infrastructure and reform the political landscape. Since then, profound conflicts and crises have become part of his everyday life - not least since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
