Queere lecture series at the University of Passau: Understand political struggles!
The University of Passau invites you to the new series of ring "Gender, Diversity & Intersectionality", which begins on April 24, 2025. The lecture series deals with current queer topics in a broad political and social context. The first lecture entitled "Queer Between the Frontlines: LGBTIQ*-Politics and Mobilizations in a Translocal Perspective" takes place every Thursday at 6:15 p.m. in the lecture hall HS7 (WIWI) and is aimed at both media representatives and everyone interested. The events are mostly organized hybrid, so that participation via zoom is possible. Lectures are kept in German or English and registration is required to reserve for external participating places. Further information is available on the University of Passau website.
The research series addresses the critical consideration of LGBTIQ*rights as part of the political developments of our time. In particular, it is pointed out that the rights of LGBTIQ*people are increasingly under pressure, in particular through right-wing extremists and authoritarian movements. These topics are often considered less important, but are central elements in many current crises worldwide. Open queer people play a crucial role in the fight for democracy, especially in countries in the global south, such as Thailand and Myanmar.
queer policy in global context
Another relevant event is the panel discussion, which takes place on the occasion of the Trans* Day of Remembrance on November 20, 2024. The focus is on political science perspectives on sexual and gender self -determination. The discussion there illuminates queer theoretical and feminist approaches as well as the challenges with which LGBTIQ*rights are confronted. As dvpw , these rights are increasingly attacked by extremely right-wing movements on both global and local level. The experts Christine M. Klapeer, Tamás Jules Fütty and Phillip Ayoub discuss the ambivalence of gender and sexuality policies and indicate the importance of cross-country networking extremely right-wing actors.
perspectives and challenges
The lecture series offers a forum to further discuss these important topics and to critically address the challenges that arise from global and local political landscapes. The aim of showing itself on how queer topics are in the center of the democracies required, which are often in the shade of authoritarian tendencies. With a special focus on mobilizing LGBTIQ*activists and the exchange of experiences from different countries, this series becomes necessary and relevant for current political discourses.
