Sophie Bandol discovers body – a crime or imagination?
In the charming surroundings of Brittany, an exciting game of confusion unfolds that leaves hardly any viewer untouched. The German feature film “Commissioner Dupin – Bretonischer Stolz” from 2017 is about the former actress Sophie Bandol, who is shocked to discover a corpse one night. But as soon as she called the police, the dead body disappeared. What really happened there? Was Sophie perhaps just looking too deeply into the glass, or was there actually a dark incident? Not only Sophie, but also the investigators from Brest, especially Inspector Dupin, are asking themselves these questions.
The film, which was first broadcast on Das Erste on January 2, 2020 at 9:45 p.m., unfolds from a gripping plot that raises questions about reality and fantasy. Inspector Kadeg, played by Jan Georg Schütte, interprets the situation skeptically and suspects it is a game of imagination. But Dupin, masterfully portrayed by Pasquale Aleardi, has a different opinion. He is convinced that a crime has taken place here and sets out to track down a missing Scottish businessman, whose fate is closely intertwined with that of the mysterious corpse. Another dead man, also a Scot, is discovered soon afterwards and takes the investigation into new, darker directions.
The investigations and their protagonists
Dupin's research leads him deeper into the secrets of Brittany, where he meets oyster farmer Baptiste Kolenc and businessman Matthieu Tordeux, both of whom seem to know more than they let on. Meanwhile, Dupin is faced with the impatient superior Locmariaquer, who repeatedly urges the inspector to clarify things more quickly. As is often the case in life, there is much more behind the scenes than meets the eye.
The acting cast around Dupin skillfully stages the film. In addition to Aleardi, Angela Winkler shines as Sophie Bandol, while Udo Samel and Joachim Bißmeier impress in the roles of the superior and the oyster farmer. The other actors, such as Ludwig Blochberger and Annika Blendl, also bring their characters to life and show how deep and complex human relationships are. The music comes from Fabian Römer and Steffen Kaltschmid, and the camera work was done by Arthur W. Ahrweiler, which gives the film a special atmosphere.
A film that entertains and makes you think
“Commissioner Dupin – Breton Pride” is more than just a crime thriller. It encourages us to think about the boundaries between reality and imagination and shows how often our own perceptions can lead us astray. As Inspector Dupin delves into his investigation, the audience has an exciting time and can ask themselves: What is true, what is just imagination? The film is not only a must for crime lovers and invites you to immerse yourself in the dark beauty of Brittany. This has already convinced many people, as have the voices of ARD Mediathek and Das Erste. If you haven't seen it yet, you should definitely do so!
