Reconstruction in the Ahr Valley: Two billion euros for new perspectives!
Four years ago, a massive flood catastrophe shook the Ahr Valley and left deep wounds. Today, on July 7, 2025, the first progress in reconstruction can be seen and the region is receiving significant financial support. Federal political pressure is doing its part to draw attention to reconstruction. Together we will rebuild
On July 6, 2025, Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer and other ministers met in the Ahr Valley to discuss the status of reconstruction after the flood disaster. Municipal representatives were also present at this meeting, including Ahr district administrator Cornelia Weigand and the mayor of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Guido Orthen. The good cooperation was highlighted under the motto “Together we rebuild”. Orthen reports progress, but calls for a reduction in regulations for faster implementation.
The new residential area on the former Brohl Wellpappe industrial site in Ahrbrück received particular attention. 120 residential units are to be built here, which, according to Prime Minister Schweitzer, are considered a flagship project for flood-protected living spaces and businesses. The first steps have already been taken with a funding notice of 990,000 euros. The units are expected to be ready for occupancy in 2028.
Long-term planning for schools and daycare centers
Also on the agenda is the reconstruction of schools and daycare centers, which is classified as a “heartfelt concern” of the state government. In Altenahr, both the primary school and the secondary school plus are affected; The renovation is already well underway, with a completion date for the primary school in summer 2026 and for the secondary school a year later. A total of more than 36 million euros will flow into the reconstruction of the educational institutions.
However, amidst these positive developments, tensions also became visible. Before the cabinet meeting, around 40 hunters protested against a planned draft law. This is intended to create a regulation in which hunters are held responsible for damage caused by game in the forest.
In order to ensure that the development aid is paid out, Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner has announced that the application and approval deadlines will be extended.
