New district cantor in Bad Dürkheim: Dominik Hambel thrilled!
A new orchestra has emerged in Bad Dürkheim: Dominik Hambel was ceremoniously introduced as the new district cantor on Sunday in the castle church. Senior church councilor Markus Jäckle performed the ceremony and thereby honored Hambel's debut in the Bad Dürkheim-Grünstadt church district. The 25-year-old opens a new chapter in church music history, following the experienced Charlotte Noreiks in this crucial role.
“Music is prayer in tones,” said Dean Stefan Kuntz in his sermon, in which he pointed out the central role of music within the church community. In the future, Hambel will oversee all church music events and thus ensure that the sound of the message always remains present in the services.
A career start entirely dedicated to music
After studying Protestant church music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main, where he took his master's exam in spring 2025, Hambel brings a lot of experience with him. During his studies he performed as an organist and choir director, and from 2018 to 2023 he worked in the Johanniskirche Bornheim. There he was also artistic director of the “Bornheimer Abendmusik” concert series. His diverse engagements, such as leading the vocal ensemble at the Church of the Redeemer in Frankfurt, show his great talent and commitment to church music.
From November 2023 to summer 2024, he also gained further practical experience as a church musician in the Protestant parish of Bergen-Enkheim, where he took over the musical design of church services and the management of the choir. This promises creative work in Bad Dürkheim, where he has officially been in office since August 1, 2025.
A look into the past of church music
Charlotte Noreiks, who succeeds Hambel, has had a decisive influence on church music in Bad Dürkheim for over two years. She was born in Mannheim and studied at the University of Music and Dance in Cologne. Her time as district cantor in the Bad Dürkheim-Grünstadt deanery was from April 2022 to August 2024. An interesting consideration is to look at Hambel's predecessor: Johannes Fiedler, also a former district cantor, worked in Bad Dürkheim from 2017 to 2021 and also had a great influence on the region's church music landscape.
So it remains exciting to see what the next few years will bring under Hambel's leadership. His job includes not only directing the choirs at the castle church, but also the organization and artistic design of concerts. With a breath of fresh air and a clear musical concept, he is ready to enrich the tradition of church music in Bad Dürkheim.
At a time when local and traditional arts are in high demand, Hambel's appointment shows how important it is to preserve and develop cultural values. The importance of music in the church, as a living expression of faith, will probably continue to be a central part of the church's work in the church district.
