Bad Kreuznach sets an example: 80 years after Hiroshima for peace!

Today, July 8, 2025, the Bad Kreuznach town hall stands under the sign of peace. On the annual Flag Day, the flag of Mayors for Peace, a network that unites over 8,480 cities worldwide. Flag Day commemorates an important legal opinion from the International Court of Justice from 1996, which classifies the use and threat of nuclear weapons as contrary to international law.

Bad Kreuznach has been participating in this important initiative since 2019 and is thus sending a strong signal for peace. Mayor Emanuel Letz underlines the urgency of the issue: “In a time of global crises, it is essential to promote dialogue and advocate for disarmament.” This year's Flag Day not only commemorates the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 80 years ago, but also the over 100,000 victims of this unimaginable suffering.

A global voice for peace

The Organization Mayors for Peace was founded on the initiative of the then mayor of Hiroshima, Takeshi Araki. More than 75 years after the bombing, the generation of hibakusha, the survivors, continues to suffer from the effects of radiation. Hiroshima and Nagasaki strongly advocate the abolition of nuclear weapons and demand that no one should suffer like they did.

The mission of the Mayors for Peace is to promote world peace through the abolition of nuclear weapons and to address global problems such as hunger, poverty, refugee crises, human rights violations and environmental destruction. The organization currently has over 8,200 member cities in 166 countries.

A Germany-wide campaign for good

In Germany, over 900 municipalities are involved in this year's Flag Day, with more than 600 actively taking part in the activities. By hoisting the flag, Bad Kreuznach is also committed to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons of 2021 and supports the clear demand for a world without nuclear weapons.

As part of Flag Day, a nationwide poster campaign will also be launched under the motto “80 years after Hiroshima & Nagasaki: For a future without nuclear weapons!” draws attention to the topic. The campaign is organized by an action alliance consisting of atom Waffenfrei.jetz, the peace cooperative and Mayors for Peace Germany.

In these turbulent times it is more important than ever to stand up for peace and disarmament. Bad Kreuznach and the many other cities show that joint action is worthwhile and that there can be a future without nuclear weapons - a future in which dialogue and peace come first.
