HSC Coburg starts the season with a narrow defeat against Eintracht Hagen

An intense game and a bitter defeat for HSC 2000 Coburg: On September 1, 2025, they were defeated by VfL Eintracht Hagen 29:31 in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga. The game took place at the Huk Arena and over 2,200 spectators were there to watch the clash. Coach Anel Mahmutefendic and his team had big plans, but in the end there was only disappointment after the opening game of the new season.

Although the game was played with full commitment by both sides, Hagen showed the necessary coolness in the crucial moments. The last meeting between the two teams ended on September 6, 2024 with a draw of 31:31, which made the high expectations for the current game even greater. HSC managing director Jan Gorr had emphasized in advance that Hagen is a team with high potential with experienced players, including former HSC player Pouya Norouzi. With Niclas Pieczkowski and Jan von Boenigk, the strength of the Hagen team was also targeted.

The season at a glance

For HSC Coburg, the focus is not only on the current situation, but also on the entire season's goals. Managing director Gorr is aiming for a place in the top 5 of the league and sees four teams as the main favorites in the championship race: Balingen, Bietigheim, Nordhorn and Dresden. According to Gorr, it is crucial to emphasize the quality of your own defense and the robust defense strategies of your opponents in order to ultimately achieve the desired leadership position. The goals for the season are high, but after the opening defeat the team now has to think quickly.

The 2nd Handball Bundesliga is picking up speed and is enjoying lively interest from spectators. While the total number of visitors in the 2024/25 season has already increased to 537,163, clubs are recording an increase of over 10 percent compared to the previous season. The HSC 2000 Coburg can also enjoy this: they currently have an average attendance of 2,126 per home game, which makes them one of the most attractive teams in the league. This gives hope for an exciting season and gives reason for confidence for the upcoming games in the league.

The 2nd Handball Bundesliga will also be hotly contested this season and it remains to be seen whether HSC Coburg can draw the right conclusions from the current defeat in order to fight its way up the table. The next matches will show whether the team is able to take on the challenges of the league and achieve its goals.

The fans are looking forward to the next home game and are hoping for a quick reaction from the team. As HSC managing director Gorr aptly put it: “We still have a lot to do to achieve our goal.”
