Cycle paths between Bad Bergzabern and Neustadt: A new age of transport!

Something is happening for cyclists in the heart of the Palatinate! The plans for uninterrupted cycle paths from Alsace via Landau to Neustadt are well underway, even if some sections have already been completed and work is still ongoing. The Südliche Weinstraße (SÜW) district administration is committed to promoting cycling. In a process involving citizens, weak and dangerous areas on the cycle paths were identified, in keeping with the motto “Together for a better cycling infrastructure”.[1]

The vision in the SÜW is clear: a flowing network of cycle paths that is not only safe but also pleasant to ride on. But what exactly constitutes a cycle highway? A look across the state borders shows that significant improvements for cyclists have been implemented in Baden-Württemberg, for example on the Mannheim-Weinheim connection. The definition of cycle highways (RSW) also speaks of connections that promote a high volume of everyday cycling and are generally safely separated from other types of traffic.[2]

Funding opportunities and financial support

The federal government has set the course to support cycling in Germany. Since 2017, investments amounting to around 390 million euros will flow into the planning and construction of cycle highways by 2030 - here the federal government is helping with around 75% of the costs. A good deal for municipalities that want to improve their cycling infrastructure across the board![3]

In North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate in particular, there are specific guidelines and standards for planning commuter cycling routes that are intended to help ensure that cycling is a priority not only in cities but also in rural areas. What is required are wide and safe paths - ideally five to the optimal diameter of four meters - as well as good connections to the existing networks.[2]

A look into the future

The future of cycling infrastructure may still be developing, but the constant expansion signals that cycling is very popular as an environmentally friendly alternative. With the progressive development of the projects in the south of the Weinstrasse, new perspectives have emerged for cyclists from Landau and the surrounding area. Such measures greatly increase the attractiveness of everyday cycling.

Cycling is not only a pleasant means of transport, but also makes a decisive contribution to achieving the federal government's climate protection goals. It is therefore important to advance these visions together. It's time to take the elevator to the next floor for cyclists - the future would be one we can create together on two wheels!
