Ludwigshafen: Fast daycare construction creates discussions and solutions!

In Ludwigshafen, the discussion about the establishment of new daycare centers (kitas) is gaining momentum. The city has decided to develop a new construction concept in order to provide the urgently needed care places more quickly and economically. A pilot project has already taken a decisive step forward - on Monday the city council gave the municipal subsidiary responsible for the construction of the new transport infrastructure the green light for the planned construction projects.

Against this background, the municipal construction project company Ludwigshafen (BPG) is planning to build a total of three so-called SmartKitas, which will offer 300 childcare places for children aged two and over. While the city presented its concept to the Building and Property Committee on May 12, 2025, it was unanimously approved by the City Council on June 30, 2025. Planning for the first daycare center, which is scheduled to open in spring 2027, could now begin immediately. The two additional facilities are scheduled for 2026 and 2027, with openings in spring 2028 and 2029.

Quick solutions to the daycare space issue

The CDU city council group is concerned about the ongoing concerns of a citizens' initiative regarding the locations, which primarily affect the Alwin Mittasch Park. The group takes these concerns seriously, but rejects the allegations that the city council members are uninformed. “We are well informed and have intensively discussed the need for new daycare places in Ludwigshafen,” explains youth policy spokesman Dr. Wilhelma Metzler. Your assessment reflects the pressure that the city administration is feeling due to the high level of feedback from citizens complaining about a lack of care options.

A specific location that is being discussed is on Leuschnerstrasse. This is owned by the BASF subsidiary “Wohnen und Bauen”, which is willing to make the property available for the construction of the daycare center. In order to discuss residents' concerns, the city seeks a dialogue to take into account the interests of all parties involved.

SmartKitas as a solution

The introduction of SmartKitas is part of a broader plan that aims to significantly improve the daycare space situation in Ludwigshafen. The municipal construction project company can act more quickly than the core administration due to fewer legal hurdles. Citizens and the citizens' initiative are invited to contribute constructively to the process. The goal remains clear: the needs of children and families should be met without losing sight of the interests of local residents.

So it's clear: Ludwigshafen has made a lot of plans to address the daycare space issue. With the new concept and the willingness to work with citizens, the necessary space for the city's youngest citizens could be created in the not too distant future.
