Horrible alcohol-related accident on the A650: closure for two hours!
On June 15, 2025, a serious rear-end collision occurred on the A650 near Ludwigshafen in the early hours of the morning, causing massive traffic disruptions. At around 12:30 a.m., a 23-year-old driver rear-ended a 19-year-old driver's VW with his Mercedes while he was driving with a 20-year-old passenger. The two vehicles were totally damaged in the crash and extensive towing measures were required immediately.
As MRN News reports, the property damage amounted to around 80,000 euros. However, both occupants of the VW only suffered minor injuries, while the Mercedes driver was obviously under the influence of alcohol. As a result of the accident, the A650 between the Ruchheim junction and the Oggersheim junction had to be completely closed for around two hours, which led to significant delays in the morning traffic flow. The Ruchheim police motorway station took over the investigation.
A look at the numbers
Drunk driving remains an urgent problem in Germany. According to Statista, almost 21,500 traffic accidents occurred under the influence of alcohol in 2020. This number clearly shows that, despite ongoing preventive measures, many road users still underestimate the dangers of drinking alcohol on the road.
Another example from the region shows that drinking and driving is dangerous not only in exceptional situations. A similar incident occurred on the A650 on February 9, 2025. A 21-year-old driver caused an accident with a blood alcohol content of 1 per mille, but fortunately was uninjured. The incident led to significant property damage and criminal proceedings, as [Ludwigshafen24](https://www.ludwigshafen24.de/ludwigshafen/ Alcoholeinfluss-auffahrunfall-a650-bei-ludwigshafen-oggersheim-sued-ruchheim-93561631.html) reported.
Focus on prevention measures
Awareness of the dangers posed by drunk drivers must be further raised. It is up to all of us to promote road safety and protect each other. Every alcohol-related accident teaches us anew: one less drink can save a life. Sustained education and increased controls are essential to reduce the number of alcohol-related traffic accidents.
Recent incidents on the A650 should serve as a wake-up call that drinking and driving do not mix. Let's keep our roads safe.
