The amputee footballers of FSV Mainz 05 have once again made history and secured the title of German champions. In the exciting final, they beat Hamburger SV 3-1 and successfully defended their title from the previous year. Coach Jürgen Menger, who leads the team with a clear plan and great passion, was extremely proud of his boys' performance.
In the semi-final, the team had already shown strong nerves when they beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1 after an exciting extra time. Hamburger SV reached the final after a dramatic 3-1 win over Hoffenheim. This tournament has once again proven that it's not just skill that counts in amputee football, but also team spirit and perseverance.
A sporting experience that inspires
What makes amputee football so special? Designed for people with amputations or dysmelia, this sport not only encourages athletic engagement but also emphasizes community and friendship among players. All participants are welcome regardless of age, gender or nationality, making the sport extremely inclusive. Players use crutches and play with one leg, while the goalkeeper uses both legs but only one arm. The field players are only allowed to kick the ball with their legs.
The Bundesliga for amputee football, which has existed since 2021, has developed massively in recent years. With around 50 active athletes in Germany, the sport is still considered to be in its infancy here, while other countries such as Turkey and England already have organized leagues. This shows that there is still a lot of potential that can be discovered and promoted.
