Peaceful protest in Kaiserslautern: 350 people against Ramstein!

On September 16, 2023, the city of Kaiserslautern was the scene of a peaceful demonstration under the motto “Stop Airbase Ramstein”. Around 350 committed citizens gathered at Guimaráes Square to raise their voices against the US air force base in Ramstein. This base has long been a controversial issue, with many people calling for a better perception of peace issues and an end to military interventions. The day began at 11:30 a.m. with speeches and musical performances, while the police ensured the security of the event and thus guaranteed freedom of assembly, as Tixio and news Today report.

The event area quickly filled with people who wanted to support the good cause. The peaceful atmosphere was sustained by the organizers' speeches and musical performances. After the rally, the protesters marched through Richard-Wagner-Straße into the city center, which, however, led to traffic delays. At around 2:20 p.m. the event ended as scheduled, but without a final rally, the reports both confirm.

A sign of solidarity

The demonstration was a clear sign of solidarity and determination among participants committed to peace and justice. Political scientists like Lars Geiges emphasize that such protests are playing an increasingly important role in German society. The willingness to demonstrate increases slightly, while the willingness to use violence during protests decreases. This is also reflected in the way the Kaiserslautern demonstration was organized: peacefully and without incident, which was also emphasized by the police authorities.

The interplay of speeches, music and the demonstration itself illustrates the strengthening of the protest culture in Germany. While commemorations and counter-protests also fill the streets in other cities such as Hanover and Bamberg, the desire for dialogue and a common basis falls by the wayside in many cases. In Kaiserslautern, however, the focus was on peaceful exchange.

The participants in this peaceful demonstration can be proud of having contributed a little to the political and social discussion in Germany. The organizers, under the supervision of the Kaiserslautern Police Department, did everything right by providing a safe and respectful platform for citizens' messages.
