Young people on e-scooters escape after an accident with a cyclist in Schifferstadt!

Late on Thursday afternoon, an incident occurred on Schillerplatz in Schifferstadt that stirred emotions. Around 5 p.m., two young people were riding an e-scooter and collided with a 63-year-old cyclist. The collision caused the cyclist to fall to the ground but was uninjured. The two teenagers, however, continued their journey after the accident, which brought the police to the scene. In a message, she called on the public to provide information about the incident or the two young people. Anyone who has seen something can contact the Schifferstadt police station on 06235 495-0 or by email at pischifferstadt@polizei.rlp.de.

But what is behind such accidents? In the last year, the number of e-scooter accidents has skyrocketed. Loud daily news Around 12,000 accidents involving e-scooters were registered in 2024 alone – an increase of 27 percent compared to the previous year. There were 27 deaths, all involving riders who were riding a scooter. An alarming development when you consider that almost half of the drivers involved in accidents are under 25 years old. The main reasons for these accidents are often incorrect use of roads or sidewalks and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The consequences of the growth of e-scooter use

The popularity of e-scooters has increased significantly in recent years, resulting in a doubling of the number of vehicles on the roads. In 2023 there were almost 30 percent more e-scooters than in the previous year, while the number of privately used scooters even rose by 37 percent. However, this development is not without consequences. According to statistics, e-scooter accidents accounted for 4 percent of the total 290,700 traffic accidents resulting in personal injury. Over 50 percent of these accidents were related to collisions with other road users, and drivers were often at fault.

The police appeal to all road users to be particularly attentive and to take interaction on the road seriously. Recent incidents, like the one at Schillerplatz, show that hit-and-runs not only have legal consequences, but can endanger everyone's safety. It is therefore important that those affected are held accountable in order to counteract such insecurity on the roads.
