TTC Oggersheim celebrates its first win in the regional league – Gionis shines!
The TTC Oggersheim has a reason to celebrate: On October 8, 2025, the team celebrated its first victory in the table tennis regional league. The historic triumph was significantly supported by the strong performance of Panagiotis Gionis, currently number 91 in the world. Despite Gionis' outstanding performances, the team lost the first game of the double match day. An exciting undertaking, but one that the team took up with fresh courage for the following game. The TTC Oggersheim has decided not to communicate Gionis' operations in advance so as not to prepare the opponents accordingly, as the Rheinpfalz reports.
Panagiotis Gionis, who has represented the Greek national team at five Olympic Games, was previously ranked No. 19 in the world. The player, who was born in Marousi, Greece in 1980, is considered a modern defender and has achieved numerous successes in his career. These include a bronze medal at the 2013 European Championships and an individual and team gold medal at the 2009 Mediterranean Games.
A versatile player with international experience
Gionis can look back on a long and successful club career. He played for WTTF Ramstein in the 2nd Bundesliga from 2001 to 2003 and was also active in the French first division and for the German club Borussia Düsseldorf from 2014 to 2016. In Düsseldorf he not only celebrated titles, but was also part of the ETTU Cup. With this experience, he brings an impressive profile to the regional league, which will certainly benefit TTC Oggersheim. In particular, the regulation, which has allowed players to be active up to the 3rd division in Germany since July 1, 2024, allows Gionis to continue playing at a high international level while at the same time taking on the challenges of the regional league.
His return to German table tennis was initiated by team captain Sascha and president Lothar; contact came about through former manager Michael Washeim. Gionis is expected to feature infrequently as he continues to compete in numerous international tournaments.
The look forward
The TTC Oggersheim is in an exciting phase. After the first win, the team will continue to do their best to reach the next level in the competition. With a player like Gionis in their ranks, they undoubtedly have a valuable asset who can act as both a player and a mentor. The challenge will be to plan your operations wisely in order to utilize your full strength while surprising your opponent.
With a breath of fresh air and a strong team structure, it will be exciting to see how the season will develop for TTC Oggersheim. The first win is a good start – there’s something there!
