Hoda Barakat: Literature discussion about pain and beauty in Speyer
Cheers to literature! Hoda Barakat, the talented Lebanese-French author, has once again caused a sensation. A few weeks ago, on April 8, 2025, she was awarded the prestigious Sheikh Zayed Book Award awarded in the literature category. The award was given to her for her novel “Hind, or the Most Beautiful Woman in the World,” published in 2024. This award confirms her good knack for compelling narratives and complex characters.
In her work, Barakat illuminates the moving life of a young mother who loses her traditionally beautiful daughter Hind and at the same time struggles with her second daughter Hanadi, who suffers from acromegaly. This story scratches the surface of our society's beauty standards and asks deep questions about identity, loss and the challenges that those on the margins of society must overcome. It becomes clear how much the focus is on the themes of transience and alienation - challenges that each of us can relate to.
