Bad Dürkheim District Hall: Green roof for climate protection and quality of life!
A lot is happening in Bad Dürkheim in the area of sustainable urban development. Work on the green roof of the district building has been going on for six months and is now entering the hot phase. How Palatinate Express reported, this measure should not only improve the building climate, but also offer numerous ecological benefits.
With a total volume of around 400,000 euros, the green roof is fully financed by the municipal investment program for climate protection and innovation (KIPKI) of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The program provides a total of 250 million euros for municipal climate protection measures, of which 180 million euros are planned for adaptation to climate change and to promote municipal measures such as Energy Agency RLP explained.
Ecological goals for the future
The implementation of roof and facade greening pursues ambitious goals: among other things, it should improve air quality, promote nature and species protection and optimize the indoor climate. In addition, the greenery stores rainwater, which relieves the burden on the sewage system and has a cooling effect in summer and a heat-insulating effect in winter. This should also reduce CO2 emissions by 19 tonnes annually, which corresponds to the “output” of 1,520 beech trees.
The actual work began at the beginning of June 2025. First, scaffolding was erected, gravel was removed from the flat roofs and old sealing was removed. The necessary construction work covers around 900 square meters of roof area, which will be renovated for energy efficiency and equipped with a special substrate made of granules, seeds and humus. From January next year, the covered roof area will be planted with a mix of sedum, herbs and grasses.
Financial framework conditions and deadlines
The funds made possible from KIPKI will be implemented by June 2026, although the funding was approved in April 2024 and access was only possible in August 2025. The district has received almost two million euros in flat-rate funding for various climate protection projects. With an amount of around 44 euros per resident, these subsidies are used widely.
In particular, the facade greening, which was originally supposed to be part of the project, has to be revised due to planning difficulties. However, it is important that the roof areas are completed by spring 2026, and initial successes can be expected by the end of January 2026.
If everything goes according to plan, Bad Dürkheim will not only have a greener cityscape, but also a noticeable improvement in environmental conditions; This not only makes things interesting for the residents, but also actively contributes to climate protection.
